Airfare, Air-fair?

Airlines catagorize seats on each plane. Each catagory of seats is assigned a specific price. This schedule of pricing is called "Yield Management". It's mission is to determine prices for a particular flight, time of year, time of day, destination, etc... that results in a profit for the airline. The airline then determins a dollar value to each seat.

Example:

If a plane has 200 seats to "sell",

The first 20 seats are priced at $150

The next 40 are $200

The next 60 are $350

The next 50 are $375

and the last 30 are $800

Once the seats in category one are sold out, the fare is gone. The traveler must purchase from the next higher category of seats at the higher pricing.

There are ways to help manouver  around some of this higher pricing.

1) Be flexible in the days and time you travel.  Airlines commonly offer discounts on certain days of the week. Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday are the most popular. also if you can fly early in the day or late in the day this also can play a factor in lowering the cost.

2) oftentimes, significant savings can be recognized if a hotel or car rental purchase is added to the flight.  Sometimes purchasing an airfare and hotel package comes out to less than the cost of airfare alone.

1 Star or 5 Star, What's the difference?

There is no single authority that establishes a uniform standard in hotel ratings.  So you will find hotels  rated in guide books, automobile clubs, and hotel associations.

Most are based on a "Star" system. Ratings range from One Star to Five Star with Five Star being the highest and best.  The guidelines include:

  • Amenities offered

  • Size of the room

  • The price

  • Services offered

  • and if meals are included

 Example:

Motel 6 will have a lower rating than the Hilton.  Not because it is not worth your patronage, but because it costs less and offers fewer services and amenities.

 Star rating looks like this:

One Star *  = Good, better than average

Two Stars ** = Very Good

Three Stars *** = Excellent

Four Stars **** = Outstanding

Five Stars ***** = One of the best in the country

BUDGET        =    1-2 stars

MID-RANGE = 2-3 stars

HIGH END     = 3 - 4 Stars

LUXURY        =  4 - 5 stars
